When choosing a photographer check out how much education he or she may have. Photography is a art form and the photographers skill level is often determined by how they view the client and the environment where the photo session will take place. Almost all professional photographers have a understanding of the lighting and posing. Great photographers understand how the lighting, posing, composition, and artistic eliminates of a session interact. Great photographers acquire their understanding through education. Their education is not a one time event whether it be a college degree or workshops.
During a recent professional photographers conference I had the opportunity to converse with a photographer who was a Professional Photographer of America Certified Professional Photographer, Master Photographer, and Master Craftsman. During our conversation he told me that in addition to participation in several workshops per year he spends at least one hour per day learning something new about his craft. In addition to the workshops and other learning experiences he takes time to practice what he has learned. Later, reviewing his body of work I realized his images and skill level far exceeded those of a majority of other photographers.
I realize most photographers will not be able to dedicate the amount of time he spends mastering their craft but we should all be devoted to learning more about our art form and practicing.
Check out how much time your photographer spends learning about their craft. If they don't spend much time learning they are not the photographer they are capable of being.
