What you need to know about copyrights

December 16, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

I recently came across this blog post that does a great job of describing what your rights are under International Copy Right Laws.  Take about a few minutes and read the whole article; it may save you from destroying your relationship with your photographer and significant financial loss.

How much education should a photographer have?

April 15, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

When choosing a photographer check out how much education he or she may have.  Photography is a art form and the photographers skill level is often determined by how they view the client and the environment where the photo session will take place.  Almost all professional photographers have a understanding of the lighting and posing. Great photographers understand how the lighting, posing, composition, and artistic  eliminates of a session interact.  Great photographers acquire their understanding through education.  Their education is not a one time event whether it be a college degree or workshops.

During a recent professional photographers conference I had the opportunity to converse with a photographer who was a Professional Photographer of America Certified Professional Photographer, Master Photographer, and Master Craftsman.  During our conversation he told me that in addition to participation in several workshops per year he spends at least one hour per day learning something new about his craft. In addition to the workshops and other learning experiences he takes time to practice what he has learned.  Later, reviewing his body of work I realized his images and skill level far exceeded those of a majority of other photographers.

I realize most photographers will not be able to dedicate the amount of time he spends mastering their craft but we should all be devoted to learning more about our art form and practicing.

Check out how much time your photographer spends learning about their craft.  If they don't spend much time learning they are not the photographer they are capable of being.

The Ohio State University Dentistry College Graduation

April 08, 2015  •  Leave a Comment

Yesterday afternoon I received a call from one of the local studios I freelance for announcing we are going to provide photography services at The OSU College of Dentistry 125th Gala Reception.  We will be photographing individuals, couples and groups of people.  As a additional service we will be printing their images on site.

This is a large assignment and will require significant resources.  The assignment will require multiple backgrounds and studio lights, computers, and printers.  The assignment requires personnel with technical computer skills, photographers with both technical and artistic skills.

The point I'm trying to make is when you hire a photographer to document your event make sure they have all the resources needed to complete the assignment to your satisfaction. Make sure you understand how the photographer is going to complete the assignment.  Ask them what lighting will be required, how much space they need, what will they use for backgrounds, and etc.. Ask them about the photographers prior experience taking candid, individual portraits, and group portraits.
